We’re delighted that cinemas in selected territories worldwide are screening the Mariinsky Theatre’s The Nutcracker In 3D once again for the Christmas season. The world’s first 3D Nutcracker, the film was premiered  in 2012 and thrilled audiences of all ages with the combination a stunning classical Russian interpretation of this well-loved Christmas ballet shot with the cutting edge technology of 3D.

Audiences have been thrilled by the virtuosity of the dancers and the opportunity to watch one of the world’s leading ballet companies in their local cinema. People all over the world love to watch the Nutcracker ballet at this time of year. In the US there are more than 2,000 productions staged during the holiday season, starting at Thanksgiving and continuing through the New Year into January– it’s become a national obsession. In 2010 ballet critic Alastair Macaulay wrote about America’s love for the Nutcracker as he prepared for a marathon Nutcracker road trip, taking in as many different performances of the ballet as possible.

For this holiday season there’s an extra–special treat as you can watch the Nutcracker in 3D for the first time. This beautiful, traditional production from the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg is the world’s first 3D Nutcracker and the 3D film gives you an amazing sense of space as you watch the dancers move across the stage, drawing you into the unfolding story. The Nutcracker In 3D was filmed at the historic Mariinsky Theatre in December 2011 over three days – two live performances both with a full house, and a third run through without an audience. The photographer, Valentin Baranovsky, was on hand throughout to capture the rich beauty and colour of the production which you can see in our stunning Facebook album.

Coming to cinemas worldwide

Perfect family entertainment for the holiday season…the world’s first 3D Nutcracker is coming to cinemas across the globe from the end of this month. An exquisite production from one of the world’s leading ballet companies, The Mariinsky Theatre, in conjunction with EuroArts Music, a specialist arts production company who have more than thirty years of experience in creating spectacular cultural events for the screen, this is the first time the ballet has been filmed in 3D.
